Why is it important that ferrule and hole cup match?

Choosing the right ferrule and hole cup may not be the first thing you think about when preparing the course for the season – but it has a major impact on durability, functionality and the player experience. A correct match ensures that the flagstick stands stable, doesn’t rotate unnecessarily, and that both ferrule and hole cup experience minimal wear.

A complete guide for greenkeepers and course managers

The ferrule is the bottom part of the flagstick that fits into the hole cup. If the ferrule doesn’t fit precisely, several issues can occur:

● The flagstick may rotate or lean

● Wear on both ferrule and hole cup increases

● The flag becomes harder to insert and remove

● Sand and debris can accumulate

● The flag becomes unstable in windy conditions

When ferrule and hole cup are designed for each other, you get a solution that lasts longer, performs better and gives a more professional appearance on the greens.
